Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I school located in a lower-socioeconomic (high poverty) area in Salem, OR. Many of our students come from bilingual households where their first language is Spanish, Russian or another language represented at our school. As a school, our goal is to focus on college and career readiness both academically and behaviorally. Our school provides a rigorous curriculum, wonderful, supportive teachers, and a safe learning environment for all kids.
School is a place where our students practice being citizens by adhering to our school values: being safe, respectful, responsible, and kind.
Despite the challenges students face at home and at school, we are always trying to create meaningful academic and social-emotional experiences that pique their interests. All students want to do well; we continue to need tools and supports to help every child build skills to achieve their potential.
Our students have experienced trauma, abuse, neglect, and far more adverse childhood experiences than any person should. However, they come to school with a desire to learn, grow, and overcome challenges. Many think school is a place to learn reading, writing, and math. Our students must also learn they are valued and resilient people.
My Project
The popcorn popping machine and supplies will be used to support positive behavior in our school. With over 500 K-5 students, we are always looking for fun and creative ways to honor the hard work of our students!
Our school values being safe, responsible, respectful, and kind the popcorn popper will add an element of fun and excitement to our school-wide, weekly celebrations!
Many schools are struggling with managing student behavior. Our school has invested, deeply, in building a positive culture and honoring those who contribute to that. While much of a student's day is focused on academic learning, social/emotional/ and behavioral development are essential areas to help kids grown and learn.
Our school-wide Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) team has surveyed our students and popcorn parties top their list of requested celebrations! While our primary focus will be to use these supplies for incentivizing positive behavior, this machine will also be used for Family Nights, Community Engagement Events, and other school-wide celebrations. This gift will keep on giving to our Four Corners Community for many years to come!
