Thirteen and fourteen year-old kids still love to read! Igniting a life-long passion for reading is what I am all about. Through reading workshop, my students have been introduced to genres and book titles they may not choose on their own. They are demonstrating deep thinking about the books they select and they are making connections to their own lives and the world around them.
Each day in eighth grade always brings something new!
My students bring a sense of wonder and excitement to my classroom.
My Project
Poetry can be daunting to a young audience; however, with today's authors and subjects, poetry is reinvented. Eighth grade students enjoy reading about controversial topics and some of today's verse novels do just that. Students also enjoy reading books that are representative of themselves and what they like. Once again, today's verse novels do just that. Providing students with a variety of verse novels gives them the authority to read what they are interested in while making sure they are reaching the skills being taught like figurative language, author's craft, and theme.
Reading verse novels gives students a sense of accomplishment.
Some verse novels are lengthy, but when students finish reading it in a shorter amount of time, they are more likely to read another and another. This also helps with their reading stamina that they will need in high school and beyond.
