Every day in my class students collaborate on multi-disciplinary projects. By the end of the school year, I want my students to be able to collaborate effectively with their peers and be able to take their knowledge into the real world and apply it.
My students come from all over the city of Houston and from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and educational experiences.
All of my classes are integrated with Pre-AP and on-level students. I have special needs students in every class with learning disabilities and also gifted and talented students. Because of the variety of cultures, incomes, and educational experiences, my classes are extremely diverse and makes for rich discussions and socializing opportunities.
Our H.S. is a STEM magnet school where students are chosen through a lottery system. The mode of instruction at our school is PBL. I have the privilege of receiving students their first year and get to help them figure out how they can positively contribute their unique abilities to our already thriving school culture. There can be challenges with so many disadvantaged students, but the rewards outweigh the challenges.
My Project
We chose book-binding supplies for students to make pop-up storybooks that integrate engineering (the pop-up and design components), biology (evolution of a species), world geography (where the species originated and migrated to), and English (story genres such as myths, fables, and fairy tales).
Students will write a myth, fable, fairy tale, or legend pop-up book to explain how their species changed over time, but will also include a parallel nonfiction component underneath the myth that contains biology and world geography facts.
These pop-up books will be created in order to teach younger students about biology and world geography facts, but will also to give students an interactive, entertaining, and creative story.
