Do you remember middle school? That time when you were still a kid, wanting to play with your matchbox cars, but also longing for your own set of wheels and freedom.
Middle school is a magical time of change, growth and discovery.
And my students grow and morph at a warp speed rate. What a privilege it is to walk alongside them as they enter into the hinterlands of adolescence and begin to explore the boundaries of who they are.
The middle school I work at is the most diverse school in our county, with a high English Learner population and free and reduced-price lunch.
My Project
Let's deepen the discussion on immigration and refugees in our classrooms by placing cutting edge relevant books that share a variety of immigration experiences into the hands of our students. Reading diverse books will help to bring more voices into our classrooms and enrich our global understanding.
For immigrants and refugees already in the classroom, having books that help represent their stories will deepen their engagement and sharpen their academic identity within the class.
Both novels and picture books will be utilized in this Pop-Up Book Kit so that students of multiple literacy levels can access the information and join in discussion and writing activities.
I plan on using this kit with students in the classroom. And I also will be doing "Pop-Up Book Talks" with staff in order to help grow awareness around cutting edge immigration and refugee books for youth. These "Pop-Up Book Talks" will be quick introductions to relevant powerful books during staff or team meetings. Some teachers do not have the time to stay current on the newest titles, and these "Pop-Up Book Talks" are meant to leverage a short amount of time to raise interest and impact student learning.
