Pop Its for Persevering Students

My Students

Every day, I have the joy of creating memories of success, failure, and perseverance while teaching an amazing group of second graders.

My second graders want to be the best they can; yet, our state is last in school funding.

We are a Title I school where everyone receives free breakfast, and most receive free or reduced-price lunches. Many of my students come from trauma-filled backgrounds and low-income​ families, and they will be the first to go to college.

Despite these struggles, my scholars are still inquisitive. They are full of questions, from the iconic, "Why is the sky blue?" to this question I was asked the other day, "Why do apples come in different colors?"

I want my students to further their curiosity by learning how to read, write, do the math, and know the world. I also want them to go home and share learning with their families.

My Project

My students completed an EVERFi reading challenge to earn a DonorsChoose gift code. Over the course of a week, students had to persevere and complete reading challenges on their iPads.

Students wrote opinion essays then voted on what to buy our class with the gift code, and they chose pop it toys.

Some of the toys they will take home, and 3 of the larger ones will be put in our classroom calm down corner to use to chill out, bringing our "lid" from "flipped" to calm and and ready to learn.
