This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a bilingual, special education teacher who serves an elementary school in the South Bronx. It is one of the poorest in the nation. Over fifty percent of our students live in shelters, ninety-nine percent receive free lunch and thirty percent receive special education services.

Our students are mostly immigrants from South and Central America, who are in need of more than a pencil and paper to understand the world around them.

They share the drive to learn about the world through videos, pictures, and even YouTube videos. The need for supplies is great since our resources are often very limited.

Education is often the only escape. It gives them the hope that one day they will be able to experience the world. Our students are in a self-contained, cognitive impairment classroom.

My Project

As many people know, with Covid in classrooms the past two years, there have been many learning gaps. I am trying to do everything I can this year to make sure that at the end of the year, my students are ready to leave my classroom feeling confident and secure in what they know. In order to do this, I feel that I need more exciting and engaging ways for my students to learn.

After getting to know my students throughout the beginning of this year, I know that these games, interactive activities, individual supplies, and flexible seating will help engage them in learning and build their academic confidence!
