Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Salinas City offers a Saturday Academy to grades k-6th. Students are able to attend on Saturday to recover attendance and receive additional educational support.
In the past students would avoid Saturday School.
However since we now have STEM theme students are interested in attending and exploring new concepts and expanding their academic skills. We also have developed a new name for Saturday School which is now called Super STEAM Academy or STEMCraft. The average attendance has increased by more than 100%.
My Project
Students will study mathematical concepts through a variety of hands-on activities. For example, students will use math to guess the number of kernels of corn in a jar. Then we will pop the corn and compare the volume of the uncooked kernels with the cooked. Students will string popcorn to study measurement and perimeter. We will make popcorn balls and study circumference as well. We will study why popcorn pops and compare how it pops under different conditions for example prior frozen kernels, soaked kernels and regular dry kernels. We will purchase a popcorn popper to make all of this. We will also student study math concepts using dice games.
Students will be engaged as they know that after everyone has proven they can manipulate the concepts, they will have a healthy treat to end it all.
