I have the pleasure of teaching 127 10th graders US History. From the first day of class, they impressed me with their ability to be articulate about difficult concepts and texts, their ability to size up cause and effect, her skill at recognizing change over time and a passion for reading, writing, and creative expression- both in and out of the classroom. They are talented students full of energy.
Their work is exceptional and they work hard all year to produce an extraordinary project that is displayed as part of a museum exhibit.
Last year we focuses on the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War and this year 9/11.
Overall the work together to make decisions employing their own reflection and judgment. Throughout the year they take the time to observe and analyze real-world problems while improving their professional skills and learning from veterans and guest speakers who live in their community. Finally, when the students worked in collaborative groups, they learned to move beyond their comfort zone to interact with people from diverse backgrounds to find collective solutions to marketing, production, recognition and engagement.
My Project
This hallmark event is meant to honor and show our appreciation on the to all who served valiantly in the FDNY, NYPD and sacrificed their lives on that day. It seems fitting to have the students create a living memorial by portraying the historic photo of the three firefighters hoisting the US Flag above the pile at Ground Zero. They will use foam blocks, paint and other material to realistically recreate "the pile".
This living memorial, portrayed by students donning fire gear, will include a monument bearing the name of each victim that fell on 9/11.
Theses names will be read aloud followed by the tolling of a bell throughout the event. The event will also feature a student built museum that highlights the timeline of events that unfolded on that fateful day among other ceremonial touches. The students will also plan and create a permanent memorial garden to forever mark the sacrifice of America's bravest. At the center will be a Callery pear tree which is now known as the “Survivor Tree” after enduring the September 11, 2001 terror attacks at the World Trade Center.
