The students at my school are excited to learn! We have a total of about five hundred sixty students at our school. We are a Title I school so the majority of students come from an economically disadvantaged background. The students come from an assortment of cultures and backgrounds including a bilingual program at our school.
My students have the potential to become life-long learners through meaningful conversations, engaging books, and exciting projects.
We use lots of hands-on, interactive activities to help our students stayed engaged.
My Project
Hurricane Harvey is not easily forgotten. With another hurricane season underway, my students need nonfiction books to help keep their minds from worrying while gaining understanding of science and history.
Struggling with reading is something all the students that enter my classroom have in common.
I want to try something new this year with my fourth and fifth graders. I want to spend 2-3 weeks on a specific topic to build their background knowledge and make them experts. We will do book clubs, discussions, and projects on Pompeii, sharks, and the Statue of Liberty. I believe that making them experts will raise their confidence in reading, make them want to read more about the topics, increase their vocabulary which will cause them to deepen their reading comprehension making them stronger readers.
While I can't erase the impacts of Hurricane Harvey, I can help them escape those worries through books.
