I am a Pre-K teacher in Brooklyn. I am trying to introduce and integrate ideas about the different types of careers that people have in the world that they can easily identify with.
This year we will be trying to identify and locate the different parts of our community.
We will be taking trips around the neighborhood and identifying the different types of jobs that they can see as part of this learning goal. Too often though, my students are not exposed to too many different types of careers/jobs. Even when they are shown what some of these careers, they do not have the opportunity to retain the name to these people and their "uniforms".
My Project
I want to give my students the hands on materials of identifying with these careers. We have dress up clothes for all different careers in our classroom. These clothes accommodate all my girls and boys. My girls have been fascinated with cheerleaders this year. They stand on the carpet singing and waving their arms making up cheers.
They even make up their own pom poms each day to wave around. I love their creativity. I want to provide real pom poms for my girls to use when making up these cheers. They are so excited when they are "cheering" in the classroom, whether it is during playtime or when they are cheering each other on during a lesson to encourage each other. I thought why not provide them with something more substantial that they can use each day. My students love to dance and cheer, I don't want to hinder this excitement. With the presence of the pom poms, maybe my boys will be enticed to show their spirit with cheering as well.
I want my students to be able to identify and role play different types of careers, and feel confident about what they can see and do when talking about the community they are living in.
The best way is through pretend where my students can take on the role of the people they see and show us what they know of these people and their careers. You can help to build the knowledge power and confidence of these students.
