Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
After completing a comprehensive four-day workshop on geography and mapping, I feel that it is pertinent for any classroom to have a wall map in order to allow visual representation of and facilitate student discussion on our world.
The theme of the third-grade social studies curriculum is "Communities Around the World." It would be difficult for my students to understand geographical and political concepts such as continents, oceans, hemispheres, and countries without a readily available model. As we study different world communities, it will be worthwhile to examine their location relative to our community and other communities that we have already studied. This can spark a discussion on how each country's geographic area has an impact on its weather, natural resources, industries, occupation, etc. Many of the incoming third grade students are struggling readers who have difficulty understanding our social studies textbooks. It would be especially beneficial to these students who can complement the text with a visual representation.
Besides completing the social studies curriculum, a world wall map will also be helpful in discussing the international date line, the earth's 24-hour rotation, and the different time zones during science class.
I teach at a Title I school where 95% of the students receive free lunch. My school does not have the extra funds to purchase additional social studies material and the NYC Department of Education only allots $200 annually for teachers to purchase classroom supplies. I really believe that the addition of a wall map will greatly enhance my students' understanding of both geographical and political concepts of our world. Furthermore, this is a durable resources that can remain in the classroom for many years to come!
