I need to nurture professional learning communities that address social and racial justice issues in order to craft classrooms that empower and inspire students.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students are diverse, energetic and resilient. The total minority enrollment is 91%, and 64% of students are economically disadvantaged. The classes we offer range from AP to self contained.
Though our students come to us with a range of needs, abilities and learning styles, the one thing that runs true for each of them is the right to be seen, heard and empowered.
My Project
I am honored to be the Department Chair of a wonderful department of ELA teachers who have developed over the years a curriculum that is inclusive of diverse voices in literature and in political discourse. We are fortunate to have common planning time and common professional development opportunities run by members of our department.
Aside from our commitment to fostering independent thought and critical analysis, we are mindful of social and emotional well being; part of well being is political empowerment.
This reality has only intensified in the wake of the COVID pandemic and the national action that has taken place in response to the murder of George Floyd. I hope to use these materials to deepen our understanding of our selves, our students lives, and to create opportunities in our classrooms that empower our students into individual and group action.
