Help me give my students books about ocean and arctic animals. They want to understand why the world's habitats are endangered, and how people can help.
My students come to school eager to learn about the world around them. They love to sit down with a friend to read, and they love to talk! Our school is an urban elementary school with many bilingual students who are learning English. Some of our students have recently arrived in the United States and did not have an opportunity to attend school before. Our school has two special programs. We have a bio-smart focus which provides enrichment and challenges in science. We also offer a Spanish and English dual-immersion program, in which students learn in two languages.
Every day, I see my students working together, playing together, and engaged in learning about math, reading, writing, and science.
They are a community of learners that cares about each other.
My Project
My students love to learn about animals. They are asking for books about some of their favorite arctic and ocean animals: polar bears, whales, sea horses, sharks, and more. They want to learn about each animal’s diet, appearance, life cycle, behavior, and habitat.
My students know that many animals and habitats in our world are endangered.
They don’t understand why more people don’t help protect our planet and all the animals that share our world. Learning about animals also helps them develop compassion and empathy. They want to help our world and keep the environment beautiful.
Every day, my students enjoy talking about what they are learning and sharing facts from the books they read. Talking about the animals they are reading about will help them to learn to express their ideas about what is special about each animal. It helps them to process and understand how important it is to protect the habitats and the animals. They are also learning to express their ideas in writing by writing about why we should protect animals.
The books will be put into baskets sorted for different kinds of habitats. That will help them to understand better how animals of different habitats have different features and different needs.
The books will engage students and get them learning about our world. Thank you for caring about my students and helping them learn.
