Students in my school are able to apply their developing knowledge of mathematics and science using technology. We use hands-on materials and learning through experiences and challenges.
Over 95 percent qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, but students still respond to our enthusiastic, caring teachers and staff.
Students are expected to work hard and maintain a consistent effort. They are highly motivated and enjoy challenging themselves. They work well in collaboration with their peers and are always creative in their solutions.
My Project
Pokemon is a worldwide phenomenon. With movies, video games, TV shows, computer programs, and Pokemon Go, the Pokemon world is everywhere. It all started with the cards. Our students already collect the cards and I have noticed that I spend a lot of my time collecting them and putting them on my desk. Recently, I sat down with a struggling student who loves the cards. He taught me how to play the game the correct way and I was amazed at how much math was involved. I started relating what we talk about in class to the game and he has been able to pick up on the mathematical concepts very quickly.
The math concepts used in the Pokemon card game include subtraction, multiplication, and addition, and will help to build mathematical fluency while relating to the students' interests in a fun way.
The cards will be used in sets and will have slightly modified rules to make the game easier and more in line with exactly what mathematical concepts are being taught. The idea is that the students will be playing this modified game with someone in their home and recording the scoring. They will then bring in the scoring sheet, and return the cards, as their homework assignment.
