Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are working so hard this year we have burned through our initial supply. We have also burned through several pencil sharpeners. At least 2-3 pencils a day per student is hard work on those sharpeners, and the students need that many to complete all of their hard work.
My students are a positive bunch from a high poverty place.
Many are unable to provide their own school supplies, and struggle just to eat three meals a day. They work hard, at school and at home, completing their assignments on time and with great reward. But my students are suffering without pencils, and sharpening them can be quite the chore.
My Project
My students work so hard all day. We write constantly, from assignments, to exit tickets, they have a pencil in hand 80% of the day. This means we are working our pencils and our sharpeners are struggling to keep up with the demand. My students also really enjoy assignments where they are able to create things, and many times these tasks require scissors. With the amount of material we have to learn it would really benefit every student if they did not have to wait and waste their time just to use the table scissors. Every student having their own pair of scissors would mean my students having more time to complete early finisher activities that push them to greater challenges instead of barely finishing assignments in time.
This will make our daily efforts so much easier.
It will defeat the time we waste looking for pencils and waiting to use scissors. It will also ensure that we have the supplies we so desperately need to work hard through the rest of the school year. These pencils, sharpeners and scissors will make our transitions easier and more efficient, and will allow for more effective teaching without unnecessary interruption.
