My students need an Electric Sharpener so pencils can be quickly sharpened and they can return to their assignments. The Storage Cart will organize STEM supplies so students can locate materials needed to complete a challenge.
I work at a Title One School. This means that many of my students eat free or reduced cost lunch. We have many diverse needs such as students with special needs, Individualized Learning Plans, and English Language Learners. My students are also diverse; academically, linguistically, and economically.
My students absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects that challenge that them to think outside the box.
Some of these engaging projects require special equipment or supplies that cannot always be found at home.
We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, alternative seating, and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met.
My Project
My fourth grade students need a new electric sharpener and two organizational carts for STEM supplies. Pencils are used daily in the classroom. What becomes a problem is when the pencil lead gets too low or breaks. Students can spend a lot of time trying to use inexpensive handheld sharpeners to solve the problem. Even though they are great about doing this, it is distracting for many of my students who have focusing issues and they miss important instruction. By having an electric sharpener, we can solve the problem quickly and increase learning time. Students enjoy working in small groups and individually to solve hands-on STEM projects. The organizational carts will give the students the opportunity to quickly find the resources needed to make their vision a reality. Students work at a variety of levels. Some are working on collaborative learning skills while others need to be challenged with higher level thinking skills.

My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they have the necessary materials to complete a task. The electric pencil sharpener and STEM organizational carts will provide students with the management tools needed to focus on learning, and not whether their materials are going to work or if they will be able to find the supplies needed to complete an activity.
