Our middle school is located in Trenton, NJ. Historically, we are in one of the poorest neighborhoods in our city. Although this is one of our greatest challenges we are fortunate to have created a culture of love and respect over the last year. When our students cross the threshold of our building each morning, they know that they are crossing into a different world from the one that they have left behind. We have made it our mission to show each child that they are important to the school and to our vision.
At G.A.D. Middle School, we are preparing students to acquire the skills needed to be active, informed citizens who value diversity and promote cultural understanding. Students often use their cell phones for photography, but many phones are not adequate and professional cameras have various settings to fit the needs of the photographs. Unfortunately, purchasing new cameras is not in the school’s budget, as we are urban community with a high rate of poverty and our operating budget reflects this matter.
Technology integration in the curriculum improves students' learning processes and outcomes.
This camera will have multiple uses including creating videos for group projects, conducting interviews, documenting sports competitions, club meetings, academic events, and promoting the diversity of the school. Additionally, I participate in our after-school program and would love to incorporate photography in researching historical sites near and around the school and take current photographs of them. Students will use those photographs as supporting documents in their informative essays about their historical neighborhoods.
Making connections between the ideas introduced and taught in classroom lessons with people, places, things, and artifacts in their neighborhood and city will enable the students to see the value of retaining what they have learned.
Students will be able to make comparisons of historical photographs of their neighborhoods with photographs they will take themselves and document the phases of change in their neighborhoods among the people, architecture, and businesses that have come and gone.
