Poets' Cafe: Students Perform Original Poetry in Cafe Setting
My students need bean bags and wool berets to help transform our old classroom into a cafe when they perform their original poems for POETS' CAFE.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school exists in one of the oldest buildings in the city. In our classroom, there are old window shades, a broken door, ripped window screens, and various other issues that year after year go unattended. Our school paper supply is low. No field trips. Next year we will be asked to sacrifice more.
My 106 students are all freshmen from various ethnicities.
They are respectful, polite, and most of them enjoy English class the most of all their classes. It's the place where they can express themselves and learn to love reading. I am in a school where students plan to attend college. Many of my students have single parents and added responsibilities at home, yet try their best do the things they have to do at school
My Project
In a dingy classroom with old chipped and some broken furniture, color makes everything come alive. I think that having a few bean bags will brighten up the class the day of the Poets' Cafe and come in handy throughout the year during literary circles and silent sustained reading time. My 106 students sit in old desks all day and I think the sight of the new furniture would bring the class to life. Also, the wool berets would be a fun prop to use during the Poets' Cafe to expose the students to some culture and give class the beatnik feel I am going for.
Poets' Cafe will be the class that my freshmen remember vividly when they are seniors waiting in line for their high school diploma.
In an era when politicians and non-educators are dictating what is best for our children and what they need to know, and forcing tests on them left and right, I think an inspiring class poetry performance will be a welcome breath of fresh air.
