This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are a Title I Elementary School located in a high poverty area of Virginia. Our school has a population of 675 kindergarten through fifth grade students. Students face many challenges in their lives, and our school provides them a place to be successful.
Our third graders are inquisitive and excited about new learning experiences.
They like to discuss topics with their classmates and welcome opportunities to engage in meaningful discussions which helps them expand their knowledge. It is amazing to watch their progress!
My Project
Third graders will learn about different styles of poetry by reading and discussing books of poems with their classmates. They will use the Fluency and Comprehension Partner Scripts to read with each other. Working together will set the tone in our class for respectful learning and provide many opportunities for students to become stronger readers.
We will hear the voices of our students in our school "Poetry Slam." Student teams will collaborate with their peers to create original poems which will be performed for others.
Students will explore emotion and self expression as they practice reciting the poems they write which will help strengthen their communication skills and build their confidence.
Our third graders will use the Dynamic Microphones to participate in freestyle battles at Morning Meetings to help them become comfortable speaking in front of others. The microphones will give students that extra little spark and motivation they need to share their voice and engage in final presentations at our grade level "Poetry Slam." Your support of this project will allow our students to have materials that will benefit them all year long.
