My Students

I am a teacher of 5th grade self-contained gifted and talented students in the largest inner-city school district in Ohio. My students are part of our district's academically gifted and talented program. My classroom is diverse with students coming from all parts of the district.

Students learn best when instruction and learning match their learning style.

My students love technology and crave for anything that expands their knowledge. Opportunities for collaboration and hands-on learning provide my students with real-world skills.

My Project

This summer I read 'The Write Thing' by Kwame Alexander and I would like to provide necessary resources for my students to not only appreciate poetry, but to also write their own. Throughout the year I would like my students to immerse themselves in poetry in many different ways and forms. Our library of poetry books will provide poetry collections, anthologies, picture book poems, and verse novels. I want my students to be able to find themselves in the poems by reading different types of poetry from poets from different times, races, and cultures. The mentor texts will be a great way to jumpstart their exposure to poetry in multiple forms and it will help ignite their own creativity.

Poetry can provide an outlet for students to express their thoughts, ideas, and feelings.

I would like to provide materials for my students to not only write their own poetry, but also to publish. The fun markers and pens will entice my students to not only create poetry, but to also illustrate and make it the work of art that it is!
