This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students love to rap but when they hear the word "poetry" they frown and shut down. They put up such a resistance to learn how to read poetry, however analyzing a poem is a skill they must be able to master on their state assessments.
My students come from broken homes, forgotten promises and hard lives.
I am amazed at how many of them manage to wake up, come to class and block out whatever is going on in their homes. My school is just minutes from Washington, DC. While challenging, I wouldn't trade my students for the world. They believe that I care about their future. Helping me bring poetry alive for them will confirm you want the best for my students too!
My Project
These poetry books will allow my students to escape from their worlds. The books will also serve as a springboard for many of my students to sound off about their own lives. They have so much to say and these books by Langston Hughes and other well know poets will serve as inspiration for my students to speak.
Too many times, my students do not participate because they have trouble getting their thoughts on paper.
Poetry is a good alternative to hear their voice. Funding this project always me to hear from ALL of my students.
