I have the privilege of teaching a group of wonderfully diverse students. I teach students with special needs. I teach students who have IQs higher than mine. I teach students that come from loving families. I teach student who hear gun shots at night. I teach students who can't afford yearbooks and students who buy extra yearbooks for their friends.
We are a suburban school that buses students in from the city.
We are a school that believes each student can succeed. We are a school that focuses on relationship building between the teachers and the students.
I am a teacher who wants to give her students the skills to make a positive difference in the world. I am a teacher who wants each student to know how important they are to the world. I am a teacher who wants to give the world to my students and my students to the world.
My Project
The book "Joyful Noise" is a series of poems that are meant to be read out loud, by two people. All of the poems are based on insects. I have seen students who are terrified to read in front of the class want to be an "actor" in a "Joyful Noise" piece. Last year students voted it as their favorite mini unit of the year!
Here's the problem--I only have 2 copies.
It takes students time to practice reading these poems together before they perform in front of the class. We weren't able to have a performance day. Instead, we opened each day with a performance, letting the performing students take home the books the night before. It was a fabulous experience and I believe I can take it to new heights with a full class set. I envision student writing their own poems for two voices and performing original poems inspired by "Joyful Noise."
