The 5th graders in my class come from a variety of backgrounds. Our classroom is a microcosm of the world with Asian, African American, Caucasian and Hispanic kids all working together.
The students are a lively crowd of 10 and 11 year olds that are truly excited about learning new things.
They have a great attitude toward learning and love to read. Often times I can be heard from the hall threatening to take a book away to help a student concentrate!
They attend a magnet school, so they really don't get much of a chance to interact outside of class. For this reason, their social life IS their school life. Being so diverse, they love to learn about each other's lives and love to share their own experiences as well.
My Project
As a teacher, I love poetry! I love to read it, create it, and most especially, to teach it! Similes, metaphors, ALL the poetic devices are learned by my students.
When my students leave 5th grade, they have a love of poetry and a self created poetry anthology that they take home.
I have heard from former students and parents that these are treasured, and that students and parents alike keep the anthologies for years as reminders of their 5th grade selves.
Your donation will help us with 2 things; it will help us build our poetry collection that desperately needs updating and it will give the students who come from another homeroom a place to store all their ELA materials in my classroom--their home away from home.
