This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach first grade at a charter school in a very low income district in New York. My students work very hard and deserve every resource we can give them.
My students love poetry - both reading it and writing it! Unfortunately, we have an extremely limited selection of poetry books and we've already borrowed all of the quality books from our local public library.
We need more poetry books! These books will be such an amazing resource for my students. As they are exposed to a greater variety of poetry, they will build a higher appreciation and understanding of the art. We will use these books as models to help students develop their own poetry styles and crafting techniques.
With your help, my budding poets will be able to explore the work of many established writers. These books will inspire them to grow into the fantastic poets that I know they can be. You will be creating a love of this art form that these students will take with them long after the First Grade!
