Poetry Books Mentor Young Poets

My students need an appropriate, relevant and motivating collection of poetry at their fingertips to use as mentors as they embark on writing original poems.

My Students

Poetry? Again? We do that every year! Let's face it: poetry can be confusing and misunderstood. While some look forward to it, many students just don't get poetry. Poetry provides a wealth of learning opportunities in writing and in life- we all need poetry!

My seventh grade students are curious, energetic, and creative.

Their interests range from music and art to sports to politics and the environment. I teach roughly 125 students at a suburban school in Wisconsin, whose interests and strengths are diverse and unique.

My Project

Every year, I begin an uphill battle nurturing the 7th grade poet out of his or her shell. Having daily access to relevant poetry titles from the start of the year will help. I've found poetry books that focus on friends, family, sports, multicultural experiences, nature, and teen angst. Each and every student will have the opportunity to find a poet or a poem that "speaks" to him or her.

Your donation will not only positively impact my current students, but also my students in the future.

Adding a poetry shelf to our classroom library will expose students to writing that they may not check out on their own at the library. This safe and easy access will allow students to understand poetry in a natural and unforced way- this is so important in early adolescence.
