My Project

Every year, I do a poetry unit with my first graders. I go to the local library and check out dozens of books. After many years of doing this, I would love to get some of the best books in my classroom for my students to be able to read throughout the year. I also would like to have poems that are first-grade accessible for me to read to them, giving them a sense of rhythm, rhyme, cadence, and a different style of writing. Every year I get surprised by which students are hidden poets who are really able to understand imagery, metaphor, descriptive language, and more. Poetry books help to illustrate those concepts to students for them to be brave and try it out.

These books are mostly poetry books that are designed for young readers and that are about concrete or high-interest topics.

The books get stamped and used by hundreds of students for many, many years. They are borrowed to read at home with families in addition to in the classroom. Thank you for supporting my teaching and my students' lifelong learning!
