My Project

Welcome to the Workshop! We are avid readers. This year, especially, we have been voraciously consuming graphic novels, news articles, mythology, chapter books, and podcasts- and will be starting Novels in Verse very soon! I believe in providing students access to choices in how they complete their work and choices in the books and stories they read. My students are amazing!

My sixth graders are inquisitive, creative, and diligent in advocating for themselves and others.

This project will help my diverse students see themselves and the struggles of their communities celebrated through art, but not deny the grit of the struggle.

I hope that after experiencing the moving narratives of kids who navigate big life changes, like that of the characters who find themselves fleeing war, finding ways to blend sports and school, or on the path to navigating life with siblings who want to do their own thing-- that my students see the power of their voices and the elegance of poetry. This also helps students learn empathy and compassion in light of such life-changing events.

The students will be participating in book clubs and student-driven conversations regarding the novel-in-verse they selected. The choice of literary focus allows my students to have a voice in the process of investigating social change, through the reinforcement of our commitment to inclusion within our diverse classroom communities.
