Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 5th grade teacher in an international studies magnet school. Our goal is to expose our students to as many cultures and experiences as possible while they learn a new language. The school offers a Spanish, French and German program. My students are in the Spanish program.
My students are some of the most diverse and culturally aware kids ever!
They come from places all over the world and love to learn about each other. They truly enjoy learning about as many people and countries as possible. They will easily become immersed in what we are learning and want to go beyond textbook knowledge.
This class is also a special group because they are very caring, respectful, and have a true and natural interest in learning.
My Project
Mention the word poetry to a typical student and you will be bombarded with groans and faces. This is because poetry can be very intimidating and daunting to most, mostly because it can be hard to decipher and interpret. I would like to use the book by Paul Janeczko to teach a variety of poems and allow students the opportunity to practice analyzing & interpreting classical poetry. Students would be much more interested in creating poems of their own if they were able to use their creativity in other ways, such as technology, and their daily life to enhance their efforts. In this project, students would get inspiration from nature & their everyday school surroundings when writing their own poems. This experience could be further enhanced by attaching a short video clip, shot using the camcorders, to their poem that captured its meaning & the author's perspective. The video clip and poem voice over could be edited using free educational software. The final product would be a creative, modern take on poetry writing! Students could dabble with a variety of genres, topics, styles of poetry, and cinematography.
