Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Advanced Placement English. It's a class that requires my students to breathe academic work, work that is analytical and full of varied interpretation. I want them to know there is room for more in the world of AP English. This project gives them the space to inhale and exhale creativity.
My students are the best kids in the world.
Really. They are full of that teenage life that scares and confuses adults. They do, however, struggle, like all teenagers, with their identities and with their hormones. They also struggle with poverty and the problems that poverty creates for students: lack of parental engagement (because of some of their parents working two jobs), lack of academic modeling (they're usually the first person in their family to attend high school in this country), lack of resources (computers, tutors, books), and, a lot of the time, a lack of motivation. Our school, Los Angeles High School of the Arts (LAHSA), is a fully-public, non-audition performing arts school serving Koreatown's Kennedy Zone of Choice. Our focus on coordinated thematic units and project-based learning helps our students to incorporate the various intelligences and knowledge from each of their classes and to recognize and build connections in their studies and their lives.
My Project
The idea to begin a creative project in one of my classes has been floating around in my head since I began to teach eleven years ago. Fate would have it that I would fall in love with podcasts. I knew my students had to be part of this creative explosion. The creative cloud that had sat dormant in my brain for a long time began to vibrate, to billow. We would make it happen.
We already have. We have three episodes of our podcast under our belt. The equipment I'm requesting consists of 5 microphones (one for each group), 5 pop stoppers, 5 digital recorders, and 5 memory cards. This equipment will give my students the ability to get their hands on professional equipment and will help those students without smartphones to not feel excluded from the process.
They are learning about collaborating, about thinking critically, about asking insightful questions. They are learning how to be creative with sound and editing choices and they are exposing themselves to human stories.
This donation will help my students understand what professional equipment feels like.
They will see that this project isn't just another classwork that means something only to them and to me. Rather, this is an opportunity to wet their feet in the world of the professional production of a project. This equipment will push them a little farther away from construction paper and markers and into a world of digital audio recording. A glimpse into this industry is a glimpse into possibilities.
