Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

English teachers strive to make each day different than the next. I need iPod speakers in which to play podcasts to mix it up!

We are a Title I public middle school, with most of our students qualifying for free lunch.

Over half of our kids live in housing projects down the street. Many do not have computers or the Internet at home, and thus miss out on the enrichment the Internet brings. Teachers are challenged to provide new technology to capture the ever-shortening attention span of our students. We all need to move beyond just "reading from the book." Listening to podcasts mixes it up and excites the students.

My Project

I have discovered the wondrous world of pod casting, and want to turn on my students to all that pod casts offer. I download programs for my students such as "Grammar Girl" to learn in a fun way about fragment and run-on sentences, or "Princeton Review Vocab Minute" in which new vocabulary is taught through song! (You can also print out the actual song lyrics.) Imagine learning vocab and word roots through clever songs in all genres, from rap to country. "Morning Stories" out of NPR Boston, relates true stories in which students can make emotional connections, and then be called upon to write the theme of the tale. "This American Life" recently aired a show featuring middle schoolers talking about their lives. For Black History Month I will play an interview of the amazing civil rights activist and Congressman, John Lewis, as he is interviewed on NPR's "Fresh Air."

Playing podcasts in class mixes it up for the students.

Don't just read from the text! Don't just listen to a teacher lecture. DO listen to the world, as conveyed through the amazing world of podcasting. I have my own iPod, but what I need are solid speakers to play podcasts loud and clear enough for my (unfortunately) large classes. Listening to podcasts opens hearts and minds. Try it!
