My students need a TAG reading system and a TAG classics set, Townsend Press' "Bullying in Schools," additional anti-bullying books, and an iPod Touch for podcasting about anti-bullying messages.
Bullying may seem like a little thing, but the effects can be huge. The results of bullying often last a lifetime. Were you ever bullied in school? If so, you probably remember it very clearly, as if it was just yesterday. I want my students to have positive memories of school-not bad ones!
I teach in a school where the children come from a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and socioeconomic situations.
The majority of my students receive free or reduced lunch, which means their families are struggling financially. Each year I typically have a few students with learning disabilities and speech needs. It is not uncommon to have one third of my students speak English as a second language.
My Project
My school has adopted an anti-bullying program this year in order to put a stop to bullying for good. It's a great program which asks teachers to have weekly anti-bullying meetings with students. We've really had great conversations during our bully meetings, but I'm looking to do something a little different in order to keep the kids tuned into the program...podcasting! My students are digital natives...being able to record podcasts about bullying and then review and discuss them would be an asset to the program. I'm also requesting Townsend Press' Bullying in Schools book as it has wonderful vignettes to share during our meetings. The other titles would give my students a wide variety of books about other people, times, and cultures to read and increase their fluency (and their confidence in reading). I believe that as their fluency increases, they'll be less likely to be a target for bullying. I also feel that they'll learn a lot from others who have persevered in trying times.
Bullying can be such a huge problem-but it can be stopped.

As my children and I meet throughout the school year, it is my hope that I will be able to continue to keep bullying out of my room. Without the worry of being bullied, my students can focus on the important thing about school-learning! Thank you for helping me to make school a positive experience for my students!
