Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Currently, my students are all at home with crowded housing and limited resources. My school is a Title 1 school, 75% of my students live below the poverty line. It has been difficult for many to cope with the circumstances. Yet they are doing their best to live while sheltered in.
The community we serve is in Flushing, NY, which is predominantly Asian (Chinese).
There are no words to describe how turbulent it has been for the students and their families during this period of time. These students work hard just in spite of the language, culture, and socio-economic obstacles they battle every day. One way to help is to continue to support their club activities even if the school is closed until fall. We don't have access to our regular club materials until we get back to school, this is where you can help.
My Project
I know most teachers have a story to tell about teaching remotely. But something that I think goes overlooked is having our clubs afterschool. Our school had a tech club that was looking to learn about podcasting and interviewing online. While this is tough, I would like to continue with that and get the kids online with podcasting tools.
Students need more than just their typical core contents right now they need a smile and ways to reach out and learn about themselves and others, getting them to start podcasting can help in a big way.
This project will be two parts, with each part including the tools for podcasting from home. For this part of the project, we will need two studio headsets for listening to their audio online, a set-off 10 stereo headsets for students who don't have anything for listening at home and a capture card to attach DSLR camera to the computer for use as a webcam. While we cannot be in the typical school setting, these tools can help bring that idea to the students while they are remote learning in the present.
