Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My digital media students are natural born creators, explorers, and artists. They are inquisitive; they want to learn; they're curious; they crave new learning experiences; they want to search for meaning and truth and share their own stories through media. It is my job to facilitate and give them access to that knowledge and the skills they need to get the answers they seek here in high school and beyond as they enter university or the workforce. We, like many public schools, struggle with technology purchasing and we rely on your generosity to fill in the financial gaps that allow us to get the technology our students crave.
As young creatives, they require the necessary equipment that can impact their final creative ideas, into powerful images that they can share with the world.
Since the start of our school year, there is a true sense of teamwork and support within the team. They are sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have intentions of pursuing a creative career after they graduate high school. Your donation will be a great starting point for their lives.
My Project
My students get bombarded with professionally curated media on a minute by minute basis, through their social media feeds and their phones. These clips, whether they be video or audio, influence and drive a lot of my students' opinions, thoughts, and behaviors. Sometimes these produced pieces have a positive effect and sometimes a detrimental one.
For years I have dreamt of creating a podcasting team at our school, a group of students and a place where interested, driven and passionate students can design, create, produce and disseminate high quality, student-focused content around areas of interest, but especially focused on local and personal issues that teens can relate to.
Many students in my Digital Media classes, along with my After School Matters classes are insanely passionate about their future, the status quo and they want to see change for a world they want to make they own. They truly are motivated to create a better version of the things to come, issue that matter to them both locally (education issue, gun and school violence, bullying, gender issues, immigration, school funding, etc) and globally (pollution, migration, human right, and climate change).
I hope that making the necessary technology available will enable a platform for their free expression to exert change via social media and any digital platform.
