Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a high school, I have the unique opportunity to teach students who are just starting to look towards their own future. To me, this means it is the perfect time to truly introduce the students to the world around them as well as show them career opportunities.
My students are almost, but not quite, adults.
They desperately want to be treated like adults, and many of them act like it, as they have grown up in difficult situations but they are still teenagers. Some of my daily joy is getting them to put aside their home burdens aside so they can focus on growing as a person, and maybe giggle along the way.
My class is filled with brilliant minds who are at a disadvantage for the technology-focused future they have all chosen. I love showing them all the opportunities that exist for them and giving them hope to pursue what they would like.
My Project
Currently, with schools shutting down, many teachers are being challenged with planning for students while balancing equitable access to technology. We all want our students to be able to continue their learning throughout this difficult time. Especially since learning can be a pleasant distraction from the world at large.
Pocket lab devices will allow my students to collect data and run labs while in the comfort and safety of their homes.
The pocket labs are durable, transportable, and collect lots of different types of data in an accessible fashion. I hope to be able to run new labs such as a concussion force lab that I can only do if I have these devices.
Without these devices, many of my students would have only paper-based assignments that they could do while home. With these devices, I can make complex, intriguing labs that they can use to explore their world, even without access to the internet.
