It is a moral imperative that we begin preparing our students for the jobs of the future. As a librarian, one way I can begin laying the foundation for their future lives and careers is by training them early on technology. I want to expand my toolbox of teaching resources.
The students in our Title 1 school don't all have computers and electronic devices at home, but I have not met one yet that does not love getting to use technology in school.
Online learning and reading programs keep even the most reluctant learners highly engaged. They are eager to explore new programs and apps. I want to give them opportunities to create, invent and determine their own learning.
My Project
I recently had the opportunity to visit a school system where the student to Chromebook ratio is one to one. There I saw how innovative programs like MyOn, IXL, iStation, BrainPop and Nearpod had transformed the classroom. The schools had fully embraced the Google Classroom platform and had experienced great success. I knew then that I wanted to have Google Chromebooks for the library that I could use to teach the many Google programs, to make student videos, podcasts, websites, blogs and so much more. I will also need a charging cart in which to store the Chromebooks and headphones for each student.
Having Chromebooks in my library would open a world of possibilities for how I could reach and teach my students.
The technology would also help the students succeed on state tests because they would be more familiar with online platforms. This grant would allow me to be the first school librarian in our school system to offer an electronic device to each child who comes to the library. They will be fully engaged learners in my library class and leave our school ready to expand their knowledge.
