Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a variety of cultural, economic, and social backgrounds. My school is classified as an urban middle school.
Over 80% of the students in my school are on free or reduced lunch, and about one in four students receive English Language Learning services.
The diversity of the students brings many perspectives and angles to the classroom. However, the economic disadvantages can be limiting and hinder students who do not have resources outside of the classroom. These students can benefit and advance from the opportunity to use a variety of educational resources and learning modalities. Yet, the finances do not allow for that to be available in many cases.
Many of my students are coming into sixth grade reading well below grade level. This causes students to be disengaged and not passionate about reading. A lot of students also have a hard time choosing just right books.
My Project
Independent reading is a major part of my class. We regularly start class with a few minutes of independent reading and students are pushed to read at least 20 minutes each night. Reading every day improves students' reading and comprehension skills. Students are given a choice in what they read, but I also steer them toward appropriate, but challenging books that align with their reading level. This project will give my students new choices of books to read for independent reading. For example, James Patterson's "Middle School" series and the "Spy School" series are exciting and relevant collections of books. They enjoy reading books that have a compelling plot and books they can relate to.
Creating a classroom library with appealing books that students can check out to read at home is necessary to encourage my students to read.
Students are more apt to read when they are given choices of intriguing and popular titles. Reading isn't only important in language arts class, but all classes. The more my students read, the more progress they will make in their reading skills and ability to comprehend and think critically. Practice on all of these skills will push my students to success in all subjects.
