The student athletes this project would benefit are wrestlers. The sport of wrestling teaches and requires a high degree of discipline, sacrifice, and hard work. These are lessons many of our kids wouldn't learn otherwise. Our program supports roughly 100 kids in our area, providing them a safe place, adult mentorship, and the lessons gleaned through competing in a very difficult and demanding sport. Our wrestlers range in age from pre-k to high school seniors, though this project will specifically benefit our middle school team.
The two towns that make up our school district have the 1st and 3rd highest crime rates in the state of Maine.
The kids on our team are warriors, fighting on and off the mat. Our coaches care. We donate time, food, toiletries, rides, and tournament fees. Unfortunately, we have a need that we are unable to meet, in house, and are asking for public support to continue to provide an alternative for kids in difficult circumstances, striving to conquer goals and succeed in wrestling and beyond.
My Project
We need wrestling shoes in order for our athletes to compete. Currently, we do not have enough shoes to outfit our team, and our kids practice in socks. With our tournament season rapidly approaching, we need to find shoes for all of our kids.
We reuse, repair, and personally buy wrestling shoes for our wrestlers, because most of our kids families simply do not have the money to purchase new ones.
A lot of our hand-me-down shoes, that we have on hand, are smaller sizes that were donated as other kids outgrew them.
Our team is larger than ever, which is very positive, except that we've grown beyond our resources. We as coaches, and our family members, purchase shoes, clothing, toiletries, and food for our team, but our need is too great this year. Please help us support the hard work and determination these kids display every day.
