When people visit our Science Olympiad classroom, they always stop at the door in order to absorb everything that is going on! It is typically chaotic and intense with over 30 students engaged in building, designing, studying, creating charts, comparing ideas, compromising and having fun!
There are two parts to our Science Olympiad group.
We have those that were able to get into the class and those students that come after school on Thursdays. We are a small K-12 school so I am lucky to be able to provide STEM to grades 5-9. Our students are like family and many of them are older siblings and younger siblings that get to work together! We believe that we must not only learn, but have fun doing so. Students are able to be creative, learn from trial and error, think outside of the box and most of all learn to problem-solve.
Last year was our first year of having a Science Olympiad team. The team consisted of seven students that worked hard and had fun. All seven have returned to the team and we added 33 more students this year!
My Project
Our team is in dire need of supplies. We have very little funding but we have a big group of kids that are truly excited to build and learn. We need wood strips, building tools, tape and other supplies. We will be building Rube Goldberg Machines that must have 18 transfers, wooden bridges, bottle rockets, wooden egg transportation cars, air trajectory machines, and even make ice cream and butter!
Students will always work in groups of two or three which is also a vital skill in life and the work force.
Our future scientists will be able to take their creations to competitions throughout the state to meet and compete with other science-minded students. This provides a wonderful opportunity to use processing skills to help with their own projects.
