I teach special education resource students in grades 6-8. Most students are mainstreamed in all four core (math, science, social studies, and ELA) general education classes, as well as two periods of resource for direct, supplemental instruction in ELA, math and/or social skills training.
As a result of their academic and functional needs, they do not have the same opportunity as their non-disabled peers to attend an active arts-related period such as dance or physical education.
With only 20 minutes of courtyard time scheduled into a 50-minute lunch period, this leaves these particular students with very little time to be active during the school day.
Students continue to plead for more opportunities to stand during class, because they are in seated positions most of their school day.
My Project
After introducing two stationary stand up desks to my awesome special education middle school students last year, my students had more opportunities to stand up during the school day, which resulted in greater student focus and engagement.
For this project, I would like to offer my students a mobile stand up desk to continue to encourage healthy behavior that leads to physical and academic improvements for students.
Donations to this project will furnish another ergonomically sound desk to my classroom to help more students remain active, attentive learners.
The mobile desk can be easily rolled for small-group breakouts. It is adjustable, so special education students who cannot stand can easily adjust the desk to a height that is proper for ergonomic head positioning while working on digital devices. In addition, it will help me too, because I will not have to bend up and down as much in a dress while assisting them with their work!
