Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in an inner city school where most of the students live in high poverty, have special needs, struggle academically and do not speak English. Our school has a 100 percent free or reduced-price lunch population. The crime rate of our school's zip code is one of the highest in the state.
Despite the situations the children are living in, I see their potential.
My students are wonderful, exciting, and delightful. To help with their English development, academic success and to motivate our students to achieve at higher levels, we need more tools. We have many students who have issues with just sitting still. A few of our students have medical issues and behavior plans. We have many students who come to school sick every day or do not come to school because of personal issues. We have many students with special needs. Due to this high population of harder to reach kids, we need many tools at our school.
My Project
During class time, and often at Specials, our Autistic and Emotional Dysfunctional kids tend to get overwhelmed. The slightest little distraction, noise, or tone can have the effect of setting off the child. We have observed that this is happening frequently in our PE classes. The set off quickly escalates to a total melt down, usually due to the frustration levels.
To help resolve this challenge and do what is best for our students, we would like to be able to offer these children an alternative activity.
Our teachers have found that a separate, cooling, quiet, activity quickly resets the students so they can rejoin the class. We have had success with LEGOS.
Thank you for considering purchasing LEGOS for our school. We will use these tools with all students towards success goals.
