My students need a classroom carpet as a meeting space for lessons, group work, and independent reading.

Being stuck at a desk for 8-10 hours a day isn't pleasant for anyone. This is doubly true for my social and energetic fourth grade students. It is very important that my students have a space that makes them eager to learn, read, and collaborate together. This space would be our new library carpet.
My students are simply the hardest working nine and ten year olds I have ever met.
They attend a public charter school in D.C. that operates on an extended day. Students are at school from 7:45am until 5:00pm. Our school's mission is to bridge the educational divide in our city by increasing the number of students from under-served communities with the academic preparation to succeed in competitive high schools and colleges. My fourth grade students understand the mission of our school and work hard every day in the hopes of attending a college prep high school and later, the college of their dreams. While my students know that academics are the number one priority at our school, they also need the chance to do things developmentally appropriate, like getting up and moving around the room to the classroom meeting space or having fun working and reading together on the library rug. They currently do not have this ability because of a lack of resources to fund a meeting space in our classroom
I am requesting a beautiful, plush, classroom carpet large enough for 30 students to comfortably meet together. The rug is colorful, beautiful, and organized into clear sections for each student to sit in neat rows. This means that we could meet there as a whole class AND everyone would have their individual space while there. Not only will a new rug make the library meeting space large enough for 30 people to meet together, it will also make it an appealing place for small group work, book club meetings, and independent reading. My students benefit greatly from being able to move around the room and learn in a variety of spaces. We have a long day, and a change in scenery is often what my students need to maintain focus.
Your donation will greatly impact how we can use our space and would double the usable meeting and learning space in our classroom.
Sitting at a desk for hours is something my fourth graders have their entire adult lives to do! Please help create an inviting meeting space by donating to this project.
