One of my greatest joys each day is to hear a student say, "Oh, now I get it!".
Getting a six year old to think on their own after having things done for them most of their little lives can be a challenge. I believe children need to be taught how to think and problem solve.
I teach first grade at an elementary school that serves a diverse population of students.
We are comprised of approximately 65% military dependents. We are a Title I school with 73% of our families qualifying for Free and Reduced Lunch . Our students come from all over the world and move an average of every 2.9 years. Our goal is to give students the very best education we can offer while they are transitioning in and out of schools with us. We are also 13% special education , which is a bit over the average. This is due to our location being so close to a Naval Hospital and the access that our military dependent students with special needs must have. It is with great pride that I have the opportunity to take care of and educate our military kids while their parents serve to protect us! Please help me give back to the families of those who serve by donating multiple resources to compliment my math and science program. A child that can problem solve a successful student.
My Project
My math and science instruction is taught using many learning tools so students develop deep conceptual understanding and mathematical and scientific proficiency.
Students select from different choices, working independently or with a group toward personalized goals, while I meet individual needs through whole-group and small-group instruction, as well as one-on-one conferring.
These resources will allow for creative thinking and planning, provide varying levels of difficulty, are challenging enough to hold interest without being impossible, and encourage children to keep trying even if it doesn't work the first time - something that can be really difficult for my students' age group.
Students thrive when they get to work together on cooperative learning tasks. They are critical thinkers, great problem-solvers, and extremely tech savvy when given the right materials and teaching structures! My students look forward to learning when they are actively involved.
Our classroom will improve dramatically by having these resources available to us.
Children learn through exploring with their hands, manipulating materials, and using their senses to take in information. Math and science are abstract concepts, but if these abstract concepts are put into a concrete material that the child can manipulate, they are able to learn those concepts, and apply them to their lives. Thanks to your generous donation, little scientists and engineers are being made.
