My students 12 copies of A Bad, Bad Day, 12 copies of The Night Tourist, 12 copies of Minn and Jake, 5 copies of Aunt Flossie's Hats, a set of Spanish Heritage books, and 7 other book sets to improve literacy skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
What is the first book you remember reading for fun as a child? Did your parents read to you when you were growing up? Did you have access to books at home? Unfortunately, most of my students do not have fond memories or reading or access to reading materials.
My students with special needs are 100% free and reduced lunch and served on an alternative, modular campus with minimal resources.
Many of them are very below grade level and do not have access to books at home. I propose creating a library media center with high interest books to improve literacy skills.
My Project
I am asking for 12 copies of A Bad, Bad Day, 12 copies of The Night Tourist, 12 copies of Minn and Jake, 5 copies of Aunt Flossie's Hats, a set of Spanish Heritage books, and 7 other book sets. These materials would be the foundation of a library of resources for students. The high interest materials will be used to supplement the limited classroom and program resources. These books will offer my students more choice of reading materials based on individual topics of interest. In Language Arts class, my students will use the books to work collaboratively in literature circles to analyze text, discuss characterization and share ideas about literary themes. Students will learn more about different topics, and they will simultaneously enhance their decoding and comprehension skills.
These resources will make a difference to my students because they will be more motivated to read about topics of interest on their reading levels.
They will practice reading successfully and discussing opinions about the texts they choose to read which will enhance their academic confidence and communication skills. These enhanced skills will change their lives for the better in Language Arts class, other content area classes and in home/community settings.
