Remember finding that topic that inspired your hunger to read more? I want my students to have that same voracious appetite for reading.
My students are in a high-poverty school district in a large, urban setting.
They come to my language arts class daily reading to learn and improve their reading and writing skills, but they admit to doing little to no reading outside of the school setting. One of the requirements of language arts is that students will read independently and pass tests over books utilizing the AR, Accelerated Reading, system. My students constantly ask for books about the Holocaust to check-out for their independent reading.
My Project
Our 2nd quarter language arts unit covers the Holocaust. This unit hooks my 8th grade students and has them yearning to learn more. I have limited books in my classroom library about the Holocaust that they can check out. I have been slowly adding titles as I find sales since our media center has few available resources. I need to add to my library to continue to develop my students into life-long learners who strive to increase their understanding of the importance of tolerance for all people.
Your donation will provide my students with Holocaust books to improve their independent reading skills while furthering their understanding that our world needs to treat all people with compassion.
Thanks in advance for your gift of reading to my students!
