Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There are a wide range of high school students on my swim team, from students that are learning how to swim for the first time to returning swimmers who are pushing themselves to get better. Many of my students come from low-income households, from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds, and many do not have a college graduate in the family. They face many difficult challenges due to economic and geographical factors. With an average GPA of 2.8 and a practice schedule of 6:00am-7:30am every morning, they are a dedicated group of students, both in and out of the pool.
My Project
My swimmers come from low-income Hispanic families that can't afford to buy swim suits. Swimming is the only outlet that these student-athletes have in their chaotic lives. My athletes work hard and deserve team swim suits that fit properly and stand up to tough competitions.
My swimmers use their old suits from the previous year that are stretched out, just don't fit right, and are uncomfortable to use in competition.
New swim suits would boost their morale and keep them focused during competitions on their strokes and dives. With new swim suits, we will finally look like a competitive and respectable swim team.
