These students are energetic, fun, kind, and curious. They are amazing human beings, with unique needs. They are economically, socially, and ethnically diverse. They are young, with so much potential inside to change the world.
These students deserve what they need to be the strongest, most successful learners possible!
A common denominator is the fact that these students, across various grade levels, are diagnosed with attention disorders, other disabilities that impair their ability to focus, and are all special education students.
These students aren't actually "mine", yet. Although, aren't they all "ours"?
These are students who, if I am blessed enough to remain in this district, will be in my classroom someday soon. And I want to do anything and everything I can to help their ability to learn TODAY!
As an added bonus, since I already have standing desks, the desks from this request will continue to serve students each year. The impact you will have will be felt for many years and by so many students to come!
My Project
It became clear to me that several students NEEDED a standing desk when our district experienced some environmental/weather conditions that resulted in middle school teachers donating their classrooms to elementary school classes for over a week. The fourth grade used my resource room classroom during that time and the sharing of the Safco Alphabetter Standing Desks with Swinging Footbars I received from Donorschoose several years ago quickly demonstrated their value.
Immediately, we watched with our own eyes, several students discovering for themselves, just what they needed to survive and thrive.
Additionally, I began pulling several fifth grade students to the classroom to read assessments aloud and these students thrived at the standing desks as well. They were eager to come to my room whenever possible so they could not just stand, but also move their legs in a way that didn’t result in a distraction to anyone else.
Truly, an “aha moment” revealed itself...I needed to do something to get these students desks to meet their individual needs.
