Teacher Professional Development: I need to attend the four day Down Syndrome Congress conference to improve my teaching methods for students with Down Syndrome. <profdevpilot>
I have been a Special Ed. teacher for the past 5 years. For the first three years of my career I worked with high school students with specific learning disabilities. Last year I changed positions and now work with elementary students with intellectual disabilities, 50% of whom have Down Syndrome.
I am requesting a 4 day professional development conference with the National Down Syndrome Congress.
This 4 day conference covers multiple different ways to best meet the needs of students with Down Syndrome. From speech intelligibility to specific reading instruction, each class focuses specifically on students with Down Syndrome and uses research and practical strategies to help them be most successful.
My Project
During the first three years of my career, I never had a student with Down Syndrome in my class. This year over 50% of my class has Down Syndrome, and I have quickly learned that they have unique challenges that I don't necessarily know the best way to solve. This conference will give me those tools. After four days of direct learning from highly regarded professionals, I believe I will return to my classroom with a whole new set of skills that will help me to best meet the needs of my students.
By donating to this project you will allow me to learn the most up-to-date research and practical strategies to help students with Down Syndrome learn.
With 50% of my class being students with Down Syndrome, I believe that this professional development opportunity will help me grow as a teacher and come back to my students with an entirely new repertoire of skills to help them be successful.
