Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with 21 wonderful and inquisitive pre-kindergarten students in a very diverse school in Brooklyn, New York. We have children from many different cultures in our class and children with many special abilities.
Our Pre-K students love to learn new things daily!
For many of these children, it is their first year in school. They are learning about themselves, others, school rules, routines, and many new concepts in various subjects! They have many opportunities to explore what kind of learners they are and learn concepts in many different ways!
My Project
Young children need to be exposed to books that show who they are in a positive light to maintain a good self-esteem and know that they matter to others. They also need learn about the special uniqueness of others and learn to appreciate differences in others, as well as similarities. This is essential to create a future generation who believes in peace, justice, and harmony.
Please help my students have access to diverse books!
Our curriculum has changed to include more diverse books, which is amazing. Unfortunately, the books were not given to us to read to our students, only suggested. I would really love to read these books to my students. Although it may be possible to find some online read by strangers, it is very important that children see and hear their teacher actually read diverse books. For a child to know that their teacher picked a book that represents them and read it to them is very empowering. Children should also be exposed to positive images of other people, cultures, languages, etc. As educators we should not only expose them to this, but implicitly teach children that they matter and deserve representation as does others who are different from them. Knowledge is power and diverse books can bring both knowledge and power to my students.
I really want to have a more diverse classroom library and would be very grateful for any help you can give my class. Thank you in advance for your help!
