For most of my 24 kindergarten students, this is their first time in an educational setting. They come to me eager to learn each day. Our school is in a very low socioeconomic area in California, and all of my students qualify for free lunch. Very few, if any, live with two parents. Some live with grandparents who have full custody, while others may be living with a foster family. Every year I have students who live with their family in a garage or basement. Some of our students are homeless or live out of their car.
All of my students receive free breakfast, lunch, and supper (if they are in the after-school program), and Second Harvest comes to our school each month and provides nutritious fruits and vegetables for my students and their families to enjoy at home.
My students do not have many resources at home. I need to provide for them.
My Project
I want to create an inviting library where my students can go and look at books. They will actually be able to read these books. I want to spark that interest, that twinkle in their eyes when they see a fascinating book. I have found just the way to do this.
I need level A, B, C, and D books that will be just right for my little ones.
Most books are much too difficult for five-year-olds. Not these books. These books are just right. They have learned enough sight words and know enough of the alphabet to be able to read these books. These books will be perfect for my little kiddos. When my students receive these books, they will be able to read to their heart's content!
With the addition of these books, our book area will be more like a bookstore or a library and I know my students will want to read more. I do not want that spark to go out. I want to keep my students excited and engaged in reading. These books are just what they need. Please help my students become better readers by supporting this project! Thank you!
