Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a diverse, low-income, Title 1 school my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things organized and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Many of my students are faced with challenges from their home environment.
Salinas has a high rate of homeless students or students who live with multiple families in a home. Many of my students do not have their own room or a personal space to keep their school learning tools, which includes books.
My Project
Kindergarten is so different than in years past. In the past, Kindergarten was a wonderful play environment where we focused on exploration and discovery. Now, it is an environment where children are held to high academic rigor and instruction. Teaching my 5 year old babies through whole group instruction is not optimal. It is so difficult for them to focus on important lessons in reading and writing. Their young minds tend to wander. One of the best ways children can learn is in small groups.
If you were to walk into my classroom during centers, you would see me sitting on the carpet with my children.
I don't do it because I think it's the most comfortable for them. I actually would love to have them sitting at a table, but the only table I have makes it difficult for me to physically reach every child. Some kids need help with writing, some with the reading. Being able to reach over and point or help them to write is so important.
I would also love a whiteboard easel to help me demonstrate how to write in front of them. Kindergarten children are being expected to write sentences such as "I like ______ because _______." Being able to demonstrate while at the table during writing time would be amazing. Right now, I write on a small whiteboard and the kids have to struggle to see the words. The ability for me to write large letters, words, and sentences for them to see would help them so much!
I'm so lucky to have such a wonderful, sweet, and funny class. Being able to teach them in the optimal environment with furniture that will help them learn best would be amazing for me. Thank you so much!
